UTS’s award winning energy efficiency performance
Identifying energy efficiency opportunities is an ongoing focus at UTS.

UTS constantly invests in the energy efficiency of existing buildings on campus.
Since 2018 we have imported cooling water from the thermal plant at Central Park opposite campus, in what is being billed as an Australian first for precinct-scale energy sharing. This innovative arrangement brings UTS various benefits including energy efficiency, carbon emissions reductions and cost savings.
Recent energy efficiency improvements projects on campus include:
- Installation of occupancy and motion sensor lighting
- Installation of wireless power control of air-conditioning units
- LED lights fittings and bulbs upgrades
- Energy management software to manage energy demand and optimise controls
- Air-conditioning upgrades
- Education programs.
UTS has been recognised with a 2019 Clever Campus Award from the Tertiary Education Facilities Management Association (TEFMA) in recognition of our continued commitment to performance improvement in energy use and carbon emissions reductions. The Continuous Improvement Award recognises the university’s consistent and demonstrated improvements in the energy and carbon sector between 2013 and 2018.
As the campus grows, UTS will continue to find sustainable solutions to reduce its environmental impact.
